How Straight ‘N’ Level Took Flight
A Flight School with Community at Heart
Founded by Nigel “Nige” Clark, a career pilot and examiner born and bred in Warren, Straight ‘N’ Level was created to bring high-quality aviation training back home to rural NSW. After years in Sydney running Bankstown Flying School, Nige saw a gap—rural students needed flexible, tailored training without the demands of full-time relocation or high-pressure academies.
Straight ‘N’ Level was his answer: a way to reconnect with the community, support local people, and offer a genuine, student-first flying school where learning happens face-to-face, not in faceless classrooms.
Everything we do—from our pay-as-you-go lessons to our welcoming, down-to-earth teaching style—is about making flying accessible, achievable, and rewarding for everyday Australians, especially those in the bush.
Connecting with the Community
Flying isn’t just a skill—it’s an experience that brings people together. That’s why we’re committed to engaging with the local community through:
- Trial instructional and discovery flights, where people can experience flying firsthand.
- Community partnerships with local businesses and events.
- Mentorship and aviation career guidance for those looking to enter the industry.
For us, flight training isn’t just about the technical skills—it’s about building confidence, creating opportunities, and sharing the excitement of aviation with others.
Training That Works for Real Life
Learn to Fly
Your aviation journey starts here. The RPL is where you build your foundational flying skills and aeronautical knowledge, learning how to safely control and operate an aircraft.
Training begins with lessons such as:
– Effects of Controls
– Straight and Level Flight
– Climbing, Descending, and Turning
– Stalling and Emergency Procedures
– Circuit Training (your pathway to first solo!)
Once you reach the circuit phase, you’ll need to complete your Class 2 Medical, Aviation English Language Assessment, and begin your in-house theory exams, leading up to your first CASA theory test.
We recommend the Aviation Theory Centre Student Pilot Kit to support your learning, available both at the school and online.
After achieving your RPL, the PPL allows you to navigate and fly longer distances, taking passengers and exploring Australia’s skies on your own terms.
This phase begins with a comprehensive 3-hour ground briefing, preparing you for navigational concepts and route planning. Then it’s into the air, where you’ll put theory into practice by flying routes to locations such as:
– Dubbo
– Tamworth
– Cobar
– Condobolin
– Canberra
You’ll log approximately 15 hours of navigation flight time. Once you’re confident and competent, you’ll sit the CASA PPL theory exam, followed by your flight test.
The CPL marks the transition from recreational or private flying to becoming a professional pilot. Training at this level is more rigorous, requiring discipline, precision, and deep technical knowledge.
Under CASA’s non-integrated syllabus, you’ll complete a minimum of 200 hours flight time (150 hours under the integrated syllabus) as you consolidate and refine your skills.
You’ll also study and pass seven CASA theory exams, including:
– Aerodynamics
– Human Factors
– Flight Rules and Air Law
– Meteorology
– Flight Navigation
– Operations, Performance & Flight Planning
– Aeronautical Knowledge
Your instructor will guide you through these topics while also helping you build confidence in flight performance, emergency scenarios, and decision-making—key traits for any commercial aviator.
We also offer specialised endorsements and advanced flight training, including:
– Instrument Flight Rules (IFR): Learn to fly using instruments alone, ideal for commercial pilots or those flying in varying weather conditions.
– Multi-Engine Aircraft (MEA): Train to operate larger and more complex aircraft, a critical step for career pilots.
– Night VFR (NVFR): Fly safely after sunset under visual flight rules—expanding your flexibility and confidence as a pilot.
We provide access to in-house invigilators for CASA exams and assist with processes like your ASIC application, ensuring you’re supported throughout your entire training journey.
